5 Things to Consider When Buying a Bunk Bed

kids bunk bed

A bunk bed is your kid's bedroom main attraction. For your kids, it is a piece of furniture that offers a comfortable sleep, a cozy place to dream and play cool games before going to sleep. Since bunk beds directly impact the lives of children, it becomes more important for parents to buy the best bunk bed to nurture their future.

To make things easy for all parents, we have listed 5 important factors that every guardian needs to consider when buying a bunk bed.

1. Mattress

The first question you should be asking yourself is what kind of mattress for bunk beds is best suited for my child? Well, memory foam mattresses are the best mattresses for bunk beds you can buy online to give your child a comfortable good night's sleep. There are many advantages of memory form mattress over a traditional pocket coil or bamboo mattress. They offer full support to the spine health and adjust your body heat and weight based on room temperature.

2. Height

The second question you should ask is how tall are bunk beds? Since most of the Canadian live in condos and small size apartments, installing a tall bunk bed in kids room can be challenging. Just to give an idea, here are the dimensions of a standard twin over twin bunk bed:

Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed Dimensions: 78"W x 43"D x 61"H

As you see a standard bunk bed has a height of 61 inches which is approximately 1/4 of the height of a condo bedroom. So, carefully measure the height of the bunk bed you are buying and the height of the room where it needs to be installed.

3. Size

The third question is what size are bunk beds? Kids bunk beds are available in three sizes in Canada.

  • Twin over Twin: 78"W x 43"D x 61"H
  • Full over Full: 78"W x 60"D x 62"H
  • Twin over Full: 78"W x 60"D x 61"H

Twin over Twin bunk bed is ideal for two kids below 8 years of age. Twin over Full bunk bed is suitable for children below 12 years of age and Full over Full bunk bed is ideal for kids under 15 years of age. Please note that an adult can sleep on full bunk beds occasionally without compromising safety.

4. Storage Option

Next is the storage space option. Since modern homes have limited space, so you need to consider buying a bunk bed with storage options to help manage the overall space. Storage bunk beds offer a significant amount of space to store bed sheets, extra pillows, and quilts in winters. If your child likes to listen to stories, you can even store bedtime storybooks and props for an act in the storage drawer itself.

5. Ladder

The last thing that every parent should carefully observe in a bunk bed is the ladder. Most bunk beds come with an inbuilt ladder. They help your child climb up the top bunk. You need to check whether the ladder steps are too narrow or wide to support the soft feet of your kid. Is there an option for a stairway chest for bunk bed available for extra safety and storage or not? Is the ladder detachable in case of repair? Having an answer to all these questions will surely help you make the best buying decision.
